What a blast this year will be!
With almost seventy talented actors auditioning so wonderfully, and only about twenty designated "roles" in our play (so far ...), we came up with a creative and entertaining solution.
Double your pleasure - double your fun! Now I'm really showing my age! Anyone else remember that?
Many of the "roles" (which will need new names of course) are now showing as two people. No, this is not the Twilight Zone, but a solution which will allow for some creative and marvelous comedy! FUN!!
We paired up actors into teams based on a variety of factors -- some were because they were similar in voice, some in build, some for their differences, and others based on their acting styles. We have a writing team working already to expand many of the roles, allowing this new characterization to shine through.
Here are a few examples of what I intend:
Rhonda, the be-bopping beach-babe who basically dances around, often
totally oblivious to her surroundings, has been cast with Hannah
and Bree paired because they're both great dancers. I picture the two of them with
joint head-phones or I-pod cords or something, absorbed by the same transistor
radio. Making it a duo allows for all sorts of physical "one-ness" kind of leaning, walking together, which direction,
dancing craziness you couldn't do with just one.
The duo of Loco Moco and side-kick - might be Jacob
doing the rhyming, Ryan trying to help, chasing after him with the
bongo for Jacob to beat, all goes well until the final word when they
totally mis-match. Or something. Tall Jacob eagerly followed by
shorter Ryan just seemed a hysterical match/mismatch, which should be
grand.
John B, the "yes man" character eager to please the villain Reef, was allocated to Kate and Shelby -- both tall and amazing
verbal timing actresses. John B (or whatever she's now called / you
are each called) is a funny, funny character who gets almost
tongue-tied trying to be "on" with whatever Reef (or others) is
suggesting. Her views flip-flop faster than hotcakes, and the Tweedle-Dum
and Tweedle-Dee aspect should be hysterical.
For all - - we're basically going to be expanding the play, adding
lines, scenes, dances ... to make it work for US. Lauren Bailey (that
writing wonder) plus others will be helping create the NEW, IMPROVED WIPEOUT!, which has me so excited I can't sit still!!
So, it's up to each of you. That's my vision for the play and our crazy casting, and I hope you'll join us. If it just doesn't sit well with you, I understand, and I sincerely hope you'll return next year!
