Amazing!  Stupendous!  Astounding!  Tremendous!

Dr. Seuss himself would create new adjectives to describe the phenomenal performances you produced this weekend!  "YOU WERE GRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEAAT!" exclaims Tony the Tiger.

Saturday's evening performance with our courageous crawling lioness was "perfect"!  You spoke and reacted and sang and danced beautifully.  If you missed any cues it was seamless (invisible to the audience), and I heard so many wonderful compliments on your abilities -- and absolute astonishment that you had created such artistry in only two weeks!  Hooray for YOU!!

Thank you, thank you for the beautiful flowers and Looking Glass gift.  I will treasure it and my memories of your smiling faces for years to come.  Thank you also to those generous families who joined us for "strike."  We cleared out of the stage & rehearsal rooms in record time (3 hours!) and it's spotless!!

As I receive more pictures I will add them to the website.  Hip Hip Hooray!  I figured out how to add more pictures ~ just put them in a different gallery!  So, enjoy the performance photographs, which are just splendid!

And, yes, we are planning to hold the camp again next year!

~ ~ ~

Stay tuned for more Adventures In Acting!

WOW!

Friday night's opening performance was no less than Stunning!  You should each be so very proud of yourselves ~ you sang and spoke and acted and reacted with such tremendous timing and energy ... and the audience loved it!

Jabberwocky, talky, talky

 Checkmate!

  ... Choo Choo ...

You Got Responsibility!

Hip Hip Hooray!

Callou!

Callay!!

Alice in Wonderland, it's just a dream away ~~

Let's do it again ... how about Saturday - Twice!

See you at the Theater at 1:30 tomorrow.

- - - - - - - - - - -

That's a Run-Through!!

Thursday we had our first "real" dress rehearsal, with lights, sound, costumes, props ... the whole works ... and it was absolutely splendid.  (ok, sure, we messed up some, but sheesh, we still have one more day!)  Lines and entrances were THERE, voices at the ready, dances on cue and our energy level is getting up there.

Tomorrow is our **REAL** Dress Rehearsal, the final chance to polish all those lines and moves!  Then we're OFF with three performances (you know when!!).

Call time for each show is one hour ahead (that's when you must be AT the theater to get ready in costume & mind & energy & focus).  So, we'll see you at 6:30 for evening shows and 1:30 for the matinee.

Correction to latest Newsletter -- snacks for the performances ARE being generously provided for all cast members, so you do not need to send one.  Many delectable thanks to our helpful families!!

Check out the article in the Gazette Times on Friday, June 30th --- it's a fantastic write-up of your efforts and hopefully even more people will come see us!  :-)  Many thanks to their reporter & photographer.  I'll include a copy on another "update" page.  What fun!

We Did It ~ Wednesday

YES!!! We completed the technical set-up cues from Tuesday PLUS we did a complete run-through of the show, and we remembered most of our lines/songs/positionings/placements/gestures and even props!  We also re-designed the Knights' scene, adding in some very funny bits as the Knights direct their Squires (who do the fighting in place of the Knights -- now that's a sweet deal!).

Two more rehearsal days and we're on ... and we'll be READY!

Everyone is doing a fantastic job.  Please read through the script (as though you've never seen it before!) and carefully LOOK at all the lines you say or sing.  Be sure you know them perfectly.  Then take a break!  Go play, eat a delectable dinner and read an exciting book, walk in the summer evening with your family and then ... to bed, to bed, to sleep, perchance to dream ~ of Wonderland!

Terrific Technical Tuesday

It was a great tech rehearsal!  First we made it through the play focusing on our costumes and many props … Did the right person wear the right costume and hold the right prop?  Where is it stored?  (and what happens if you leave it somewhere else? … bummer = hide and seek)  Then we started working on light & sound cues, step by step, just like Alice!

Wednesday we’ll finish the light & sound cues, work on any not-quite-there-scenes, then start our “Run Throughs” = doing the play all the way through with everything “on”!

CAST PARTY – Saturday after the last performance we invite all cast members and their families to stay around for a fun celebration of your achievements.

STRIKE PARTY – Sunday we remove all evidence that Adventures In Acting was at Ashbrook.  Bring your power drills, your work gloves and your enthusiasm.  Many hands make light work and we’d greatly appreciate any help you can give.  Come at 10:00 and we’ll see how fast we can clear it all away!  J

TICKETS – Are selling well at Rice’s Pharmacy … do you have yours?  Have you reminded your friends and neighbors?  Your recommendation is our best publicity, and after all this work it will be wonderful to have a full house!!

COSTUMES – Are INCREDIBLE!  Your basic black should already be staying in the dressing rooms, now please bring in your clean Adventures In Acting teal t-shirt to keep here too (or be sure to wear it every day).

THINGS TO DO = Rest, Sleep, Drink Water and READ the SCRIPT again and again and … keeping in mind where and what you should be doing; how does YOUR character reacts to the action?  What are your hands and eyebrows doing?

It’s going to be absolutely phenomenal ~ you’re TERRIFIC!!

Marvelous Monday Magic!

We're rested and revved for our final week of preparations.  The scenes are progressing marvelously, smoother and with more "characterization pizzazz" each time!  Betty is a wonder at helping us use our voices properly - how to stand, how to breath, how to project without hurting ourselves.  And the sound ... well, you'll just have to come hear it for yourself!  :-)

Please remember that those purple "coupons" are NOT tickets.  Each actor received two "free seats" but you need to select what show and what seat.  You can exchange them for a reserved seat ticket at Rice's Pharmacy (it's just like real money, but not quite!).  For the best selection I'd recommend you go in quite soon to get the seats you'd prefer.

A couple of things we'd like to borrow ...

  • Fish decor for Lobby Decorations (table cloths, window displays,...)
  • Several large coolers to keep intermission refreshments chilled

Thank you again for all your smiles and support, the early bedtimes and lots of water!

Saturday was Stupendous!

We Did It!  The first week is done!  We've conquered each and every scene, song, movement, and logistic required.  Now we just have to practice and perfect all the itsy bitsy details, add in some technical elements, build up our characterizations and create the Theater Magic which brings Wonderland to LIFE!!  (Yup, another busy week ahead!)

Your job this weekend is = REST!  SLEEP!  DRINK WATER!  Oh, and one more little thing = Read the script (many times) and consciously think through the blocking, dances, "where am I now?" and "what should my face look like?" and "what are my hands doing?" for every second.  See ... told you it was easy!  :-)

Enjoy your day off, relax, and we'll see you Monday morning!  You're TREMENDOUS!!

Friday was Fabulous!

Another amazing day ~ we started off with a rousing game of "Sharks and Minnows" (quite appropriate for our theme, don't you think!), then worked on our songs -- big breath! support! Smile! -- and moved into rehearsal of various scenes.   Hip Hip Hooray is getting better and better, Dixie Chickens are Looking Good, Humpty's legs are ... well, veeeeeerrry interesting ... and beware cake-eating lions and unicorns!  Great job being "off-book"!!

The best part, though, was watching the actors independently rehearse scenes, helping each other to memorize lines and remember blocking sequences.  This is a tremendous pack of kid-power, and each day they're bringing that enthusiasm to the play, improving themselves and the overall performance.  Wow.

Newsletter #2 went home today ... and is also available on the web. Enjoy!

Thursday was Thrilling!

What fun! After playing a "spatial awareness" game we worked through some kinks in the opening & closing scene logistics, practiced some songs and dances, then moved into an unofficial "run through" for the first couple of scenes ... which continued with very few glitches all the way through the first act!  WOW.  Sure, there are things to fix and review and cement, but it was Fabulous!  Great job, everyone!

COSTUME INFO = Evidently black sweat pants are available at Albany's Old Navy store for $3-4 each, and Target has black beach shoes for about $6, so those are pretty affordable options if necessary.

CHARACTER INFO = The "who's who" will be ready Friday morning, so you'll each know exactly what part and scene you're in!  Hooray!

Remember ... drink lots of water and get lots of sleep!                YOU ARE IMPORTANT!!

- - - - - - - - - - -

Wednesday was Wildly Wonderful!

We managed to get through the transformation into Wonderland (successfully!), and this afternoon finished reading through the script.  We're on schedule and having lots of fun!  The kids are phenomenal, focused and energized, remembering complicated blocking routines and all the dances.  Thanks to all who were able to help sew costumes or paint the set ~ it's been morphed into an amazing underwater tapestry!  Just wait for the rest of the detail work...

Reminder = there IS camp this Saturday, regular times.

Unfortunately I've evidently hit the limit on photos in the gallery, so will need to pare down the earlier ones to put up today's installment.  Hope you've been enjoying them!

Your homework today (and every day) is to DRINK LOTS OF WATER and GET LOTS OF SLEEP!  That's the best thing you can do to prepare for the coming week and our performances.  As someone whose voice vacated her body for a few days, it's not fun.  Drink.  Drink some more.  Rest.  Go to bed early.  Hooray for YOU!!

Tuesday was Terrific!

Everyone is doing famously, and we've already blocked and practiced many scenes (even if it doesn't feel that way!).

Tomorrow (Wednesday, 6/20) we'll dive INTO Wonderland (the transformation), with its many intricacies, coordinating and practicing Who's Where When and with What ... it's going to be Wild!  So come with your patience and memories fully ON, ready for some wonderland wizardry!  :-)

We're also having our Paint-the-Set-Session from 2:00 until ? and everyone is welcome (with adult supervision).  If you can stay be sure to take grubby painting garb to change into.

Remember that you need to be "off book" by Friday, so keep reading through and reading through and ...

See you tomorrow!

- - - - - - - - - - -

WOW!  We've finished the first day, and I am astounded at the energy and talent of this group of young actors.  It was a jam-packed day with things such as:

  • receiving buttons and shirts and posters to help distribute
  • our first newsletter (also available on-line)
  • exploring the set
  • learning each others' names
  • learning dance steps
  • practicing the songs
  • blocking scenes (yikes - Tweedle Dee even needed knee pads!)
  • rehearsing
  • enjoying
  • snacking
  • reviewing
  • reading through the start of the play (to be continued tomorrow ...)

Stage-craft is an interwoven tapestry ... while some were busy on stage, others were being fitted for chess head-pieces, learning lines, practicing songs, etc.  There are props to be built, sets to be painted, costumes to be sewn, lights to be set, programs to be written, and even more.  We will try to expose the actors to as many of these facets of theater as we can.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) we'll focus on Choo Choo, Walrus & Carpenter (with the Dancing Oysters!), The Responsibilities, and reviewing songs and blocking so far.  Check over your lines so you can ignore your book!

Everyone should be "off book" (that means you don't even have it in your hands!!) BY THIS FRIDAY

Thank you very much for all the parental support both at the theater and at home.  We're sure YOU know the Wonderland songs already too, and we appreciate your on-going patience and encouragement.   :-)

- - - - - - - - - - -

Tomorrow is the start of camp!

The set is incredible ~ extremely sturdy and FUN to climb and dance on; you'll love it!  Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers who have made it all literally "come together"!

Now we need YOU, the actors who will make Wonderland's magic come alive.

Be sure to bring a healthy snack and lunch ~ we'll be busy, busy, busy and you'll definitely get hungry!  We've got your nametag/buttons and t-shirts all labeled and waiting for you, extra posters ready for delivery to your personal favorite locations around town, ... if only that clock would move a bit faster so we could START!

- - - - - - - - - - -

As of Saturday, June 17th, we're on schedule!  We are building today at Ashbrook's Art Room if anyone wants to come help or give encouragement. (directions to find the entrance door are below)  Probably someone there from 10 - 6:00, but it all depends how things go.  The set is incredible!!!  We've constructed sturdy stairs and are working on the separate platform and bridge.  It is SOOOO COOL, you have to see it!  Meanwhile costumes are progressing gorgeously - check out the pictures in the photo gallery.

We'll see you ALL on Monday morning, ready to start at 9:00.

Jabberwocky, Walrus & Carpenter & Checkmate are our focus areas for the first day.  Be sure you know your lines/music!!

Hooray for Wonderland!

- - - - - - - - - - -

It's coming & we're so excited!  Want to get involved now?

WE COULD USE SOME HELP...

1.  Posters are ready for distribution, but we need more help.  If you have time June 12-17th to wander town (younger than 14 must have a grown-up with them), we'd LOVE it!  Plus helpers get their t-shirt ahead!

2.  Costume papier mache and set construction & decoration is goopy and really fun ~ Erik is working on these at Ashbrook's Art Room June 13-16 afternoons.  (Please knock HARD on his outside door up the tall stairs around the corner beyond the tennis courts. Turn left in parking lot, around the building.)  An email would be even better so we'll expect you!

Thanks!
